Half of Canada is more than eighteen miles from a road
The American version of this map is a map of an almost empty set: half the lower 48 is within a quarter mile of a road, and the handful of places more than twenty miles from one would fit inside Detroit. Canada is not a bigger version of that. It is the other picture entirely. Measured across all 398 million land cells — 8,949,026 km² of ground, lakes taken out:

The median point in Canada is 19.43 miles from the nearest road. The median point in the lower 48 is 0.26 miles. That is not a difference of degree: it is 75 times over, and it means the typical question this map answers is not “where is the empty quarter” but “where is the road at all.” 9.3 per cent of the country — 828,751 km², larger than any province but Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia — is more than a hundred miles from one.
Why this one is a globe
Every web map you have ever scrolled is Web Mercator, which inflates area by one over the cosine of the latitude. At the 49th parallel that is a factor of about one and a half and nobody minds. At Victoria Island it is four, and at Ellesmere it is eight. A flat map of Canadian remoteness draws the Arctic several times its real size — and the Arctic is the entire subject here, so the projection would be lying about precisely the thing the map is for.
So the default view is a sphere, where the Arctic is the size it actually is and the answer has to earn its place on a globe you can turn. The flat map is still there, one click away, because it is the one that zooms in far enough to see a single road.
What this map calls remoteness
The straight-line distance from a point of land to the nearest mapped road. Nothing more than that.
Said precisely: distance as a compass reads it, not as you would travel it. A point a mile from a road across muskeg and a river counts the same as a point a mile across a field. Every road counts, whoever owns it — a winter road, a mine haul road, a gravel spur to a weather station, and the 401 are all roads. So is a road in Alaska or Greenland; the question is how far the nearest road is, not the nearest Canadian one.
It is measured on a 150 m grid in an equal-area projection, so a cell in Nova Scotia is the same size as a cell on Ellesmere and nothing needs correcting for latitude. Land means Overture’s coastline-clipped province polygons, minus water — lakes are not land, and neither is the sea. That last exclusion matters more here than it did in the United States: Canada is about a tenth fresh water, and left in, the remotest place in the country would be somewhere in the middle of Great Bear Lake.
And what it is not
It is not a measure of how hard a place is to reach, and in the North that gap is wider than anywhere. It knows nothing about ice, freeze-up, muskeg, or the fact that most northern communities are served by aircraft and barge and have no road to be far from in the first place. A great deal of Canada is reached by floatplane, and this map cannot see a floatplane.
Three answers, and the water between them
“The furthest from a road” has three defensible readings, and in Canada they are three genuinely different places rather than three roundings of one.

The third is the one to pick if your objection is that a coast is not really remote when somebody could arrive in a boat. It throws out anywhere whose surrounding circle is less than nine-tenths land, which is every shoreline and every island small enough to see across, and it does not care whether the spot is on the mainland: the middle of Victoria Island is no more boat-accessible than the middle of the Barrenlands, and gets judged on the same test.
The American map defaults to that scope, and for good reason: there, the all-land winner is a chain of barrier islands three per cent surrounded by land, and a place you can reach by outboard in twenty minutes is not remote in any sense worth mapping. The land-fraction test was built to throw those out.
It does not mean the same thing at 73° north. Half the circle around the Victoria Island spot is sea, which reads identically in the arithmetic — but it is the Arctic Ocean, frozen most of the year and empty the rest, and the nearest settlement of any kind is Cambridge Bay, 290 miles away in a straight line. Nobody is arriving there in a skiff. So this map leads with the all-land figure and keeps the other two a click away, rather than inheriting a filter designed for the Gulf of Mexico.
In the United States the two-track question decided everything. Here it decides nothing.
OpenStreetMap tags a lot of the American West as track: ranch
roads, logging spurs, mining two-tracks. Whether they count moved the lower-48
leaderboard by up to nineteen miles and wiped out every desert contender.
Canada’s answer barely notices.

The mainland and inland winners do not move at all, and the all-land winner moves 4.58 miles. There are no ranch two-tracks in the Barrenlands and none on Victoria Island, because a track is something people drive on repeatedly enough for it to become a track, and nobody drives there. The American map needed two versions of “road” to tell two stories; in Canada they are the same story.
Trails behave the same way. The Thorofare in Wyoming is 21.64 miles from a road and 0.29 miles from a trail, because people have been walking into it for a century. Counted against trails as well, Canada’s furthest point is still 251.63 miles out. There is no trail because there is no tradition of walking there.

Prince Edward Island cannot get you 3.75 miles from a road anywhere on it. Nunavut’s median is 72.81 miles — more than three times the furthest you can get in the entire contiguous United States, at the typical point, over two million square kilometres. Between Prince Edward Island’s median of 0.20 miles and Nunavut’s of 72.81 there is a factor of 360.
How it was made
Roads and trails come from Overture Maps, which carries OpenStreetMap lineage. Every road is burned onto a 150 m grid and the distance to the nearest one is computed for all 398 million land cells of Canada.
The lower-48 map did that by cutting the country into tiles and giving each one a 60 km halo, so a cell near a tile edge could still see the roads just outside it — and then proving each tile: if its furthest cell is nearer than the halo is wide, no road outside the window could have been closer. Canada breaks that proof. There is ground on Ellesmere Island hundreds of kilometres from anything drivable, so the halo that would prove it is most of the country. Instead the whole network is put on the grid at once — 53 million road cells — and every land cell asks which of them is nearest. That is exact everywhere by construction, with no halo to choose and no tile that can fail. Checked against the old method on tiles where the old method still works, the two agree on all 25 million cells without a single one differing.
The projection had to change too. The natural Canadian analogue of the grid the American map used stands on the 50th and 70th parallels, and Canada runs to 83°. Measured against true distances on the ground it stretches a 50 km line by a third up there — which is exactly where the answer turned out to be. This uses an equal-area grid centred on the country, good to 3%, and then re-measures every published distance on the ellipsoid itself, so the numbers above have no projection in them at all. Each was checked a third time against the raw road geometry: the worst disagreement across twenty-seven spots was 74 metres in 430 kilometres.
