Buffalo's Schools by Race and Ethnicity

Every district and charter school in the city, drawn as a pie chart of the students who attend it. The size of each pie is the school's enrollment. The seven schools in the district's latest closing proposal, the resolution of October 21, are outlined in black.

This is a companion to Buffalo's Schools, Mapped, which has enrollment history, staffing and outcomes for each school.

District and charter schools compared

Sources. District schools: the Buffalo Public Schools enrollment dashboard, active students this fall by the race or ethnicity the district records. Charter schools: New York State Education Department BEDS day enrollment, 2024-25, the latest year published. The two sources are two years apart, so compare district and charter schools with that in mind.

How to read it. Each student is counted in one group, using the categories the district and state report. The state counts a charter as one school, so a charter with more than one campus shows the same mix at each campus. Student counts for each group are worked out from the published shares and are rounded.

Proposed closings are from the district's latest plan for the 2027-28 school year, the superintendent's resolution of October 21, 2026, which was withdrawn before a vote. The Board of Education has not voted. Six schools would have their state school code closed (17, 33, 59, 131, Riverside 208 and East Community 309) and School 90 would become a prekindergarten special education center; those seven are outlined. School 82 was taken off the list on October 20. Research Laboratory (366) would no longer close: it would share the Riverside building with Leonardo da Vinci (212), and Middle Early College (415) would move into the East Community building. Details for each school are on the main map.
