If you’ve known me for a while, you know me as someone who is all about social media. Connectedness was my thing. I pushed for years to get friends and family (Bec!) on social media so we could all stay connected and share. I built my business(es) on Facebook. Perhaps it’s because I can be social online in a way that I’m not in person. As an ambivert with mild social anxiety, online connectedness was my way to stay connected. No More.
After watching the Social Dilemma on Netflix, combined with recent conversations regarding race and policing in America, I decided it was time to take a break. I’ve taken breaks before, but this time feels different. I don’t want Facebook to track 52,000 data points about me in order to sell me to the highest bidder. Nope. Facebook isn’t the only problem. In an increasingly digital world, providers everywhere are leveraging their resources to improve their ability to sell you online. I’m talking about you, Google. So this is only the beginning. The beginning of an attempt to be more mindful of my online presence and what information others control.
